David G. Futransky, Class of 1973

This year’s Copeland Award recipient started out in the family laundry business and later explored careers in sales and finance before finding his true calling. As a seventh-grade teacher at his alma mater, Evanston Township High School, this Chicago area alumnus has become a vocal advocate for Williams and for the liberal arts in general. He rarely misses an opportunity to interview prospective students, organize college fairs,or welcome newly minted Ephs to the Williams family. He’s equally dedicated to his classmates, serving as co-president of his class and a key organizer of his 25th reunion. But visiting the Purple Valley every five years isn’t enough; he also participates in education conferences at the College and spreads the word to undergraduates about two of his loves — teaching and Williams. Though he’s changed the lives of countless young people, this Eph’s most notable achievement just might be a prospective student he recently sent the College’s way. His daughter Laura is now a member of the Class of 2005. For his commitment to Williams students — future, present and past — the Society of Alumni is proud to honor, from the Class of 1973, David G. Futransky.
