Henry N. Flynt Jr., Class of 1944

During longtime service to your beloved College, most notably as creator of its modern system of financial aid, and continuing well into a remarkably unretiring retirement, you have set a standard for civic engagement in our area that may be unmatched. Clerk, Trustee, Deacon, and Moderator of the First Congregational Church; Chair of the Board of Pine Cobble School; President of the Community Chest and the Rotary Club; Chair of the 1753 House Committee and Co Chair of the 1765 Bicentennial Committee; Treasurer of the House of Local History; Trustee of the Rural Lands Foundation and Williamstown Theatre Festival; Corporator of North Adams Regional Hospital; Director of the Williamstown National Bank; decades long member, even, of the local Draft Board—it is as if you were pedaling alone your bicycle built for six! Almost every aspect of our community’s life has been touched by your grace. Your love of things historical (Who else would own such a bike?) has inspired your most visible civic contribution-stewardship of your parents’ dream of developing Historic Deerfield into a premier center for the appreciation of New England history. As trustee of Historic Deerfield since its founding in 1952 and its longtime Chair, you have made that dream reality—solidifying the Village’s finances, professionalizing its staff, and bringing to fruition the Flynt Center of Early New England Life, a marvelous multi use interpretive facility that opened last fall. You have accomplished all this with an extraordinary modesty that is itself a blessing to us all and that only deepens the pleasure we take in honoring you this day.
